Bhupender is back. And back with a bang. BaadloN se kaaT kaaT kar, kaagzoN pe naam joD.na / ye mujhe kya ho gaya. This highly infectious number with Gulzar being Gulzar and Vishal matching the magic of Maachis is the best of the lot. Bhupender sounds afresh to an extent that at times he doesn't sound like Bhupender at all. The solo however is magical. It will haunt you for many days once it gets into your ears. DoriyoN se baandh baandh kar, raat bhar chaaNd toD.na / ye mujhe kya ho gaya.
And then there is another Gulzar. Of Dhanno ki aankhoN meiN (Kitaab) and Golmaal hai bhai sab golmaal hai (Golmaal). He comes to his own with this second solo (the album has three of them, too many for this age of duets:) of the album - Goli maar bheje meiN, bheja shor karta hai. Sung excellently by Mano this is another personal favourite of mine. Sandeep Chowta also figures with his lovely little piece called the Mood of Satya. Don't remember him? are wohi 'Jab Dil Kisi Pe Aata Hai' fame!
The third solo goes to Lata - Geela geela paani (coming next Thandi Thandi barf :). Vishal tries to innovate with irregular beats (it is rather becoming his style) and succeeds.
There are two duets out of which I liked the Asha/Wadkar number more. It's catchy and has lovely lyrics. Asha teases saara din saD.koN pe khaali rickshey sa peechhe peeche chalta hai. paaji hai, shareer hai, ghoomati lakeer hai, chakaraa ke chalti hai comes the reposte from Wadkar. A treat indeed. From whom but Gulzar can you expect a word like neem-shareef. If you want to see how effectively words from daily life can be used in songs, check the lyrics of this one.
So another winner from Gulzar-Vishal team. Though at times I have felt that Vishal is not doing justice to the lyrics. The mood of the tune at many times contradict the words. I don't know whether this is intentional 'cause generally the outcome is a good song with maybe a different appeal. Still he is perhaps the best Gulzar might have got after Pancham da. Hope to have more from the team in near future. Pyaas to ab lagi hai....

It's Rahman in his freak mood. You can't help comparing the album to Hindustani for songs like Ajooba and Columbus. Even the style of lyrics sound so similar to P.K. Mishra's. Columbus chutti hai aayee have some good sound effects with Sonu Nigam trying to change his voice (much like the way he did in 'ye dil deewana' of Pardes) which eventually sounds more like screaming than singing.
Tauba-tauba's beat is strikingly similar to Ek tha gul aur ek thi bulbul (Jab Jab Phool Khile). And Kahta hai mera dil can be very easily attributed to Illaiya Raja for the sound & style. Et tu Rahman? The song which is getting most popular is Hai Rabba (that's because they are promoting this one only!). But my favourite of the album is this lovely at-home number - Kahne ko daadi lekin saheli, daadi hai tu kaisi. It bears the Rahman stamp. Amidst some excellent work in the interludes and great sfx the song retains its meoldy. Javed Saab is just theek-thaak.
On the whole, a fun affair. Nothing that's going to go very far. Hummable, all.

More than what you will generally expect from Anand Raj Anand. Abhijeet again excels (somehow he seems or sounds among the best of the current lot) in Resham Jaisi ye baaheN. Baadal BahaareN nazaare sung by Udit & Kavita has that soothing Jatin-Lalit effect with an innovative (hopefully original :-) rhythm pattern. Among others I liked Bahon mein aao zaraa (Abhijeet, Kavita) . By far, the best of Anand Raj Anand. Couldn't figure out from the cover which one is from Surendra Sodhi. O mere Dulhe Raja (Jojo, Kavita & Nayan) perhaps !

Not at their best though, J-L, have come up with a listenable album. There are sounds of RD (it's not new for them :-) in a couple of songs and one song even reminds Ravindra Jain (that's a new one, for sure :-[ ). Still Suno Jara (inspite of Sanu) and Na koi Tera save your day. Jatin-Lalit are among the best MDs today and I expected a work better than this especially as they have teamed with Javed Akhtar first time. I also expected a song or two of Amit Kumar in the album. Anyway, have a hearing.

Gulzar - Vishal team comes up with another marvel after Maachis and Boodhe Pahadon Par (Non-Film). The album opens with typical Gulzarish baccha song - ChupDi Chhachi - sung by Aditya & perhaps Gautam Kinnarkar (remember Chaddi pahan ke phool khila hai), though inlay only mention Aditya. Hariharan sounds refreshingly different in DauDa dauDa bhaga bhaga sa - another lovely song. The Maachis magic seems working again in Raat ye bhi gujar jaayegi. Remaining songs are also enjoyable.

Straight from Heaven with Mukesh singing two beautiful romantic songs on typical Jaidev compositions. Lata sings another couple of them in her inimitable style and a young voice (remember that the score was composed way back in 1973). Kaifi does his bit to make the album an all-time great score.
